. this is the stakes at hand. there's two ways to look at this, i think. on the policy side governor romney's critiques are wrong. the president has done a remarkable job in terms of getting us out of iraq, setting us up for withdrawal out of afghanistan, killing osama bin laden, dismantling al qaeda. those are incredible accomplishments by my standard. if this was a republican president, i guarantee you republicans would crow about the incredible record. on the other side, i have no idea what the republicans are doing. if they think they will win a foreign he policy debate with the president, they're sorely mistaken. >> the key is the great contrast. many things are starkly different with governor romney and president obama. again and again you see romney advisers pressed on what are the differences. what changes would you make? what decisions would be explicitly different than the obama administration? i don't want to say you get crickets, but you saw the exchange with the ambassador it who hesitated to say what he would have done with hosni mubarak. >> there's not a great deal of difference. the spe
mitt romney to the, he gave this 20-minute speech on foreign policy. not exactly one of romney's stronger suits thus far. take a look at yet another poll here. the question being better on foreign policy shows him trailing the president by seven points on that one specifically. wolf blitzer, let's talk to you about all of this. joining me live from washington here. and we'll listen in a moment to that speech from mitt romney at vmi. let me ask you this, why a foreign policy speech this late in the election campaign? do you think he sees some sort of opening here? >> yes, i think that the killing of the american ambassador and three other americans in benghazi, libya, the consulate there, and the confusion surrounding the administration's explanation for what happened, the condemnation by some has given him a clear opening. take a look at what is happening throughout north africa and the middle east. he said that today. there is a lot of anti-american attitudes out there. he senses there is a moment now for him to take advantage and as you point out, brooke, he's going to have t
: that goes, said romney, for the muslim world, from libya to syria to iran. he suggested obama policies in libya let al qaeda get strong enough to kill our ambassador. in syria, romney would get the rebels heavy weapons, despite the administration's fear they will end up in the hands of al qaeda. and romney claimed he would be tougher on iran about nuclear weapons. >> this is a dangerous situation. >> reporter: romney said president obama's making it more dangerous by resisting israeli prime minister netanyahu's apparent willingness to attack iranian nuke plants. >> i know the president hopes for a safer, freer, and more pros pous middle east, along with us. i share this hope. but hope is not a strategy. >> reporter: romney's remarks, said one expert, are not a strategy. >> he tried to sound very tough in his critique of barack obama today. however, those are mostly rhetorical differences on some of those key foreign policy issues as opposed to actual new tough policies. >> reporter: the president fired back in an ad to run in virginia. >> reckless, amateurish, that's what news media an
the summer, carol, he talked about that foreign policy trip overseas. mitt romney was strongly criticized by some in the palestinian community after he basically said that the reason why the palestinian territory there is not doing very well is because of cultural differences with israel. there is one excerpt from the speech we want to show to you. this is basically where mitt romney is going to be going with this speech later on this morning. he is going to say, quote, we cannot support our friends and defeat our enemies in t middle east when our words are not backed by deeds, when our defense spending is being arbitrarily and deeply cut, when we have no trade agenda to speak of and the perception of our strategy is not one of partnership, but of passivity. it is time to change course in the middle east. one final thing, carol, on a campaign conference call yesterday romney's foreign policy team talked about some presidents of past they might be shaping their foreign policy principles after. they talked about the presidencies of jfk, truman and even bill clinton. after that first debate
romney on the issue of domestic policies at that first presidential debate, he's going to be going after the president on foreign policy at that speech at the virginia military institute here in lexington later on this morning. and the campaign did release some excerpts from the speech that we could look at to sort of see where he might be going with this address later on this morning. a few things to point out, carol. he's going to be going after the president as you mentioned just a few moments ago on those diplomatic attacks in benghazi, libya. he's going to be talking about that attack as the work of al qaeda, saying that that was likely the work of the same forces that attacked the united states on september 11th. now, a few other things he's going to be talking about. he's going to be calling for new sanctions, stronger sanctions against the government in iran to prevent that country from developing nuclear weapons. he's also going to be talking about arming the syrian rebels. lastly, carol, as part of his remarks that were releasted by the campaign, interesting to note that he is
about it. i think we take it one day at a time. >> today mitt romney will focus on foreign policy. >> obama has been commander in chief for the past four years. >> romney is coming off of a strong debate performance against president obama. >> i asked him with white 23 million americans out of work, he spent the first two years fighting for obama care instead of them. >> he insisted it was not the real obama or his policies that might-- the real romney or his politics that night. >> he did a superb acting job. >> the present pope a little fun at himself at an l.a. concert featuring stars like steve wonder. >> they just performed flawlessly night after night. i cannot always say the same. [laughter] >> now the pressure is on for the vice-presidential candidates to perform as they go head to head later this week. nd ryan based on thursday night in kentucky. and >> thank you. an amber alert issued in colorado. details on the missing child. a move on the massachusetts firm >> covering the nation, police in central colorado are looking for a break in the search for a missing 10-year-ol
, romney boiled down the president's foreign policy to one of hope. >> i know the president hoped for a more prosperous middle east aligned with us. i share this hope. but hope is not a strategy. we can't support our friends and defeat our enemies in the middle east when words rbt backed up by deeds. when defense spending the being cut. when we have no trade agenda to speak of and our strategy isn't one of partnership but of passive ti. >> on actual foreign policy his specifics were thin amounting to deepening critical cooperation and reaffirming historic ties. susan glasser, your overall assessment of mitt romney? there was no shortage of criticism for the president. what did you make of the prescriptions romney was laying out? >> thanks, alex. you made an important point to say this isn't necessarily a fully formed recipe for what a rom uh any administration would look like. he's seeking to gain a campaign advantage over president obama rather than outline a fully formed foreign policy. i think you didn't see that today. in fact, in many ways it's still not clear whether there i
